Servicing Sydney's Inner West
Artificial Grass in Sydney's Inner West
Shade-tolerant synthetic turf for terrace courtyards, heritage rear yards and pet-friendly backyards — Balmain to Marrickville, Newtown to Summer Hill.
Synthetic turf built for terrace life
Inner West gardens are rarely large — and they're almost never sunny. Federation terraces, workers' cottages and semi-detached pairs dominate the housing stock, and what's left at the back of each is a narrow, fenced courtyard shaded by a 200-year-old fig, a neighbour's extension, or both. That's the reality we design installs around: small, shaded, high-traffic, and usually home to a dog that would destroy natural lawn in a fortnight.
We've laid synthetic turf in hundreds of Inner West backyards — the rear of a Balmain peninsula terrace, a Newtown courtyard at the end of a bluestone lane, a Marrickville block that had gone to mud between trampoline and back door. What the locations have in common is that natural lawn had already failed on the site before we were called in, and the owners wanted something that looked green, survived the dog, and didn't demand weekends of irrigation and reseeding just to stay alive.
What actually kills lawn in the Inner West
Three problems turn up on almost every quote we do here. The first is shade — gum trees along front boundaries, mature figs dominating the yard, terrace extensions casting half the block in afternoon shadow. Shade-stressed lawn doesn't photosynthesise enough to recover from use, and the Inner West has plenty of use: kids, dogs, outdoor kitchens, cricket nets.
The second is dog urine. We see more pet-related lawn damage in the Inner West than anywhere else we work — the density of dog ownership is simply higher, and the yards are small enough that the same couple of spots get hit every day. Natural lawn doesn't come back from that; properly installed synthetic drains through and rinses clean.
The third is ground prep. Inner West soils are often a mix of old fill, clay and buried construction debris — particularly in the former industrial pockets around Rozelle, Marrickville and the Bays. We factor this into every quote: it usually means a deeper excavation and a graded drainage layer before any turf touches the ground.
What an Inner West install actually involves
Access is the first thing we assess. A lot of Inner West terraces have a single side return at most, and some only have rear-lane access — neither of which fits a mini-loader. For tight sites we barrow excavated spoil out by hand and carry rolled turf in through the house or over the fence, and we allow time in the quote for it. That's the difference between a clean one-day install and a three-day job that wrecks your floors.
For the product, Inner West jobs typically call for a shade-tolerant medium-pile turf with a natural brown thatch for realism. We avoid the bright-green 'showroom' turf you'll see on discount sites — in a shaded Inner West courtyard it looks fake. Under the turf we lay a 75–100mm compacted road base with a drainage fall worked away from the house, and for pet installs we add an antimicrobial infill that neutralises urine rather than letting it pool in the base.
