Why the Hills are different

The Hills District sits at a sweet spot of conditions for synthetic turf. Blocks are generous by Sydney standards — often 600–900m² — and houses are typically set up for full outdoor use, with pools, covered alfrescos, play zones and landscaped garden beds. At the same time, the ground underneath almost every Hills property is heavy clay. Natural lawn on Hills clay is a continuous battle: it compacts with use, holds water in winter, cracks open in summer and never really establishes deep roots. Most of our Hills clients have been through two or three lawn renewal cycles before calling us.

We install across the full Hills footprint — established family homes in Castle Hill, Baulkham Hills and Cherrybrook, through to the newer master-planned estates across Kellyville, Rouse Hill, Stanhope Gardens and The Ponds. Alongside the residential work we handle commercial installs around Norwest business park and community grounds across the Hills Shire. The constant across all of it is ground prep — in the Hills, the base build is 70% of the install quality.

What Hills clay does to an install

Clay is plastic. It swells when it's wet, shrinks when it's dry, and moves a measurable amount across every season. A synthetic turf install laid directly over raw Hills clay — or over a thin 40mm base that a budget installer has pushed in — will ripple within a year, sag in the high-use zones within two, and hold standing water every winter. We see the failure mode regularly on quotes where someone else has already had a go.

The second challenge is block size and integration. Hills backyards typically aren't a single rectangle of turf. They're a composition — lawn, pool, paved alfresco, raised garden beds, side-return pathways, trampoline or cubby zones. The synthetic install has to meet every one of those edges cleanly, with no visible join, no raised lip and no gap for weeds to push through. That's detail work, and it's where a lot of time goes on a Hills install.

The third is client expectation. Hills homes are often premium, landscaped and recently renovated. The turf has to match that standard. 'Acceptable' isn't the brief — people want it to look genuinely like a well-kept real lawn, and they notice if the pile tone, height or edge finish is off.

How we build a Hills install

The base is where we spend the time. Over Hills clay we excavate to a minimum 120mm, and on larger or slower-draining blocks we go to 150mm. The excavation is then compacted in two lifts with a 20mm crushed-stone aggregate, graded with a clear fall toward existing drainage or an ag-drain if the site needs one, and topped with a finer 7mm decomposed-granite bedding layer for a laser-flat finish. Over a base that size, the turf sits stable across every season — no rippling, no sag, no standing water.

Edge work gets the same level of care. We use timber batten, masonry edge or powder-coated steel depending on what the turf meets — paving, garden bed, pool coping, driveway. Every edge is fixed so the turf perimeter stays tight through years of foot traffic and weather. The product itself is typically a premium-pile Australian-made turf with a natural tone profile and a high face weight for realism and durability. For family blocks with pets or pools, we spec accordingly.
