Servicing Wollongong & The Illawarra
Artificial Grass in Wollongong & The Illawarra
From North Wollongong's beaches to the escarpment villages of Figtree — synthetic turf specified for heavy rain, coastal salt and the Illawarra's unique weather.
Why drainage is the whole game in the Illawarra
The Illawarra has weather most Sydney installers never encounter. The escarpment lifts incoming moisture and dumps it as sustained heavy rain — Wollongong averages more rainfall a year than Sydney and catches east-coast lows that drop a month's worth of water in a weekend. At the same time, the coastline from North Beach through Port Kembla to Shellharbour sits in a salt corridor at least as aggressive as anything in Sydney. That combination — saturating rain and salt-loaded air — is merciless on natural lawn and cheap synthetics alike.
We cover the full Illawarra — residential work in Wollongong, Fairy Meadow, Figtree, Dapto and Shellharbour, plus commercial, club and community-ground installs from the CBD out to the escarpment foot. What every install shares is a base build designed around drainage first and everything else second. If the water doesn't get away fast, nothing else you do to the turf matters.
Three Illawarra conditions that punish lawn
Rainfall is the first and most important. East-coast lows, southerly busters and sustained summer storms dump more water in a week than inland Sydney sees in a month. Natural lawn goes boggy, fungal disease takes hold by midwinter, and by spring the yard is half moss. A badly installed synthetic does no better — we've been called to rescue several cheap installs in Figtree and Fairy Meadow where the base held water and the turf floated.
Salt is the second. Coastal Wollongong — North Beach, Towradgi, Bulli through to Thirroul — is solidly in the salt corridor. It strips colour from natural lawn and degrades budget synthetics within a few summers. The UV-stabilised Australian product we spec holds up under warranty for eight years.
Slope and access is the third. Figtree, Mount Kembla, Keiraville and the escarpment-edge streets are built on real gradient, and block layouts reflect it — terraced gardens, multi-level backyards, retaining walls. Each of those transitions is a point where drainage, edge fixing and turf joints need to be handled carefully. We build our installs around those transitions rather than fighting them.
How we build an Illawarra install
The base is where Illawarra installs live or die. We excavate to 100–150mm minimum, lay a compacted aggregate base with a clear fall toward existing drainage, and on larger or sloped sites we'll include a subsoil drainage line under the base before the crushed-stone bedding goes down. For escarpment-side blocks we'll sometimes run an ag-drain along the uphill boundary to catch overland flow before it ever reaches the turf.
For turf selection, coastal jobs (anything within a kilometre of the ocean) get the high-density UV-stabilised product with a finer fibre and salt-warranted backing. Further inland we use a more hard-wearing family-use product with higher stitch density for foot and paw traffic. All our Illawarra installs are backed by the 8-year manufacturer warranty and a written install spec you keep — so if you sell the house, the buyer knows exactly what's under the lawn.
